How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost in the Coachella Valley?

Right after “how long will it take,” this is the question I hear most. Bathrooms are small rooms, so a lot of people expect a small number. Then the quotes come in and they’re all over the place. Here’s the straight answer, the same way I’d give it to you standing in your bathroom.

The short version

At Equilibrium Builders we price bathrooms in three tiers:

  • Essential, about $25K and up. Clean, functional upgrades with quality finishes. A good fit for guest baths and powder rooms.
  • Mid-range, about $35K to $50K. Custom vanities, an improved layout, premium fixtures, and better materials throughout.
  • Luxury, $65K and up. A full redesign with spa-style features, custom tilework, high-end lighting, and integrated technology.

These aren’t teaser prices. They include licensed trades, permits, and materials that hold up in the desert. Size, layout changes, and your material choices decide where you land. You can see the full breakdown on our Pricing page.

A simple rule of thumb: budget about 5% to 10% of your home’s value for a bathroom. On a $400,000 home that’s roughly $20,000 to $40,000. On a $1M+ home it’s $50,000 to $100,000 or more.

How our pricing compares

If you’ve searched online, you’ve probably seen numbers that look a lot lower than ours. Here’s why.

The “average” you see online includes small jobs. Angi’s 2026 cost guide puts the average bathroom remodel at about $12,153. But that average lumps in everything from a new faucet and paint to a full gut. In the same guide, Angi puts a full bathroom remodel at $25,000 to $80,000.

The industry’s main survey lines up with our tiers. The 2025 Cost vs. Value Report from the Journal of Light Construction prices two standard bathroom jobs for the Pacific region, which includes California:

  • A midrange bath remodel, which updates a basic 5×7 bathroom with a new tub, toilet, vanity, and tile, averages $27,710.
  • An upscale bath remodel, which expands the room to about 100 square feet, relocates the fixtures, and adds a frameless glass shower, freestanding tub, stone counters, and heated floors, averages $86,863.

Those regional numbers run a bit higher than the national averages ($26,138 and $81,612). Our Essential tier sits right around the midrange benchmark. Our Luxury tier starts below the upscale one.

When a bathroom quote comes in far lower than that, it’s usually leaving something out: permits, waterproofing done right, or the plumbing and framing repairs that show up once the old tile comes off. I’d rather give you a real number up front than a low one that grows halfway through the job.

What really drives the cost

Layout changes. This is the biggest swing. Keeping the toilet, shower, and vanity where they are saves real money. Moving a drain, turning a tub into a walk-in shower somewhere new, or stealing space from a closet means new plumbing, framing, and sometimes electrical.

Tile. Tile is labor-heavy. Large-format porcelain, natural stone, floor-to-ceiling walls, niches, and detailed patterns all add hours. The tile you pick and how much of the room it covers can move your budget more than almost anything else.

Shower glass. A frameless glass enclosure looks great and opens up a small room, but custom-cut heavy glass and hardware cost more than a standard framed door or a curtain. Glass is also measured after the tile is done, so it adds a step to the schedule.

Fixtures and features. Thermostatic valves, rain heads, body sprays, freestanding tubs, heated floors, floating vanities, and designer lighting each add to the total. None of them are a must, so this is where you get to decide what matters to you.

What’s behind the walls. Older desert homes can hide water damage under a shower pan or outdated plumbing behind the tile. Angi notes that labor alone is typically 40% to 65% of a bathroom budget, which is why surprises behind the walls add up fast. We plan a contingency for it and tell you right away if we find something.

Why desert bathrooms are a little different

Hard water. The Coachella Valley Water District notes that hardness varies across the valley and that the white spots people see on glass and fixtures come from hard-water minerals. In a bathroom that means scale on shower glass, clogged shower heads, and stained grout. I steer clients toward finishes that hide spotting, glass with a protective coating, easy-clean grout, and fixtures that can be serviced. If the plumbing is open anyway, it’s also a good time to think about a water softener.

Heat and seasonal homes. If you’re only here part of the year, a bathroom that sits unused through a hot summer needs good ventilation and waterproofing done right the first time. That’s not where you want to save money.

Permits and timeline

Most real bathroom remodels need a permit once you touch plumbing, electrical, or the layout. Angi puts typical permit fees nationally at $100 to $1,000. Your city and the size of the job set the exact number, and we handle the paperwork either way. I wrote more about remodel permits in Palm Desert if you want the details.

On timing, a full bathroom remodel that keeps its layout usually takes a few weeks of construction. Custom tile, moving plumbing, and long lead-time materials stretch that out. Here’s how long a Coachella Valley remodel takes, start to finish.

FAQ

Is a bathroom remodel worth it at resale?
It depends on the scope. In the 2025 Cost vs. Value Report, a midrange bath remodel in the Pacific region recouped about 91% of its cost at resale, and an upscale one recouped about 44.5%. If you’re staying for years, do the bathroom you want to use every day. If you’re selling soon, keep the scope tighter.

Can I save money by keeping my tub?
Often, yes. Keeping fixtures in place avoids moving plumbing, which is one of the biggest cost drivers. Tub-to-shower conversions are popular here, but they cost more when the drain has to move.

Do you do powder rooms and guest baths?
Yes. Our Essential tier is designed for exactly those rooms.

Are you licensed?
Yes. Equilibrium Builders is a licensed California general contractor, CSLB #1156974. Whoever you hire, check. Here’s why that matters in California.

Planning a kitchen too?
Doing both at once can save time on permits and setup. Here’s what a kitchen remodel costs in the Coachella Valley.
